In the comments section of my post, Sophisticated Rooms in Black and White, I had a request (from a blog I follow) if I had any black and white bathrooms. Well, of COURSE I’m going to oblige!
She is going to renovate a bathroom of a new home she is buying (yeah!), but not knowing her taste, I wanted to make sure I gave her enough pictures to work with (all had appealing features). I lean towards traditional with a dash of modern thrown in for interest. And that’s great – for me! But this isn’t my bathroom! So you will see a progression because I have so many pictures. I’m going to try to cover many styles to make sure she has what she needs to be inspired. Warning: some of these bathrooms are not ones that are practical and have shortcomings, but have features and elements that still can be utilized
But, what you will not find is a brushed or burnished finish on any of the faucets. As I mentioned in my last post, I have crow-like tendencies and will fly towards anything that is shiny or reflective. I was the child that put her pennies in vinegar … every single time I got a penny, which if you aren’t familiar with this, it shines those pennies up like nobody’s business!
Please, please forgive my formatting!! I have spent the past 2 days trying to get this out and I have done nothing different from prior posts and have done everything to try to clean this up, but I’ve had a hard time getting it to look good! Then my pictures inexplicably turn to the small blue box with the question mark!?!?! Wha-wha-what!!!! When dealing with a lot of pictures, this is the last thing you want to see (because I like to see/ponder/comment/ on them)!
Well, enough about that! (Drum roll) Here’s the first of at least 2 batches 🙂
Sigh, there are so many things about this bathroom I love, I don’t know where to start. It makes me what to take a sledge-hammer to all my bathrooms and start from scratch. The tile work is GORGEOUS and understated. The sink may not be practical for everyone, unless you have a linen closet or some storage or a cupboard (even in the bathroom). But hanging pictures and the silver frames, I just adore in bathrooms. Why not?
I’m leaning towards luxurious, ornate and fanciful, but I do progress to others!! I mentioned I liked reflective, and that is what caught my eye like a moth to the flame here, but what is so upscale about the bathroom is the marble going up the wall in large sheets.
Using things that are not meant for its intended purpose (in this case room) is something that adds interest. Let’s face it, bathroom mirrors are boring, so why not spend a little more and get something that has an impact.
A wardrobe in the bathroom. Note the beautiful marble detail behind the sinks…
I like the sink, but with so much going on with the wall paper, I think a simpler mirror might be a better option and more elegant (or lose the wall paper).
I’ve never seen tile like this!
I love the tile floor with the pseudo mat.
A close up of the tile border from the two previous pictures…
A fanciful tile border. I’ve also seen it where words are made out of small tiles.
Awful picture, but the point of it is using furniture for a sink and having the bathroom look more like appointed and furnished.
Not black and white, but I like the top tile detail used on a diagonal throughout.
I love the hammered pewter sink, but the mirror seems out of scale in the space…
The floor tile is taken up about a foot onto the wall, which is ingenious. Love the use of drapery as it fits in with treating the bathroom like you would any other room. But I would lose the lamp on the counter.
I like the treatment on the cabinet faces with the contrasting colors.
Mixing traditional (chandelier, mirror) and modern (linear lines of sink and tub).
Just pretend the vanity and the mirror frame was black 🙂 It might be nice to have the mirror frame over the vanity be black as well. (I kind of think it was a misstep to have it white – sorry HouseBeautiful!).
LOVE the frames of the artwork and the shower curtain really pops – I never get tired of polka dots! Accessories can really make a bathroom. For a black and white theme, grey on the walls can be an option.
A pale whisper of a third color on the walls. Love doors (and trim) painted black. Note tile work and framed art.I will be following up with a second post with MORE pictures and some tips on bathrooms, but I wanted because of the number of pictures, my inability to format SO many pictures with words in a timely manner, I thought I would post half now and half later!I hope others can benefit as well from this post. I figure if one is asking then more want it as well! I am off to play with my little ones 🙂

These are all amazing spaces! I would kill to have the wardrobe set up in my house. If I had space for my laptop in there, I may never leave.

All beautiful photos…but I’m a little thrown off by the chair in front of the toilet in the first photo. To each his own, I guess. 🙂
ADetailedHouse said:
That’s so funny you bring that up because I was SO close to commenting on it, but I wasn’t sure if I should draw attention to it!! I have no idea why anyone would put that in there…and it looks too cramped!
Amy said:
I thought the exact same thing and it made me laugh. Here is this beautiful bathroom – so sophisticated and yet, it seems to welcome a little voyeurism. Actually, I just remembered I put a chair in the bathroom when I was potty training my kids.

These are some beautiful bathrooms! I have to say though in the first picture I don’t understand the chair in the WC.

I love these. Black and white is just so timeless. My favorite though is mid post, with the different tile creating the pseudo mat. I’m a fan of basketweave, and this is perfect when you have sufficient floors space. Thanks for the post!

Hi Suzanne! It really is timeless! And tile work can add so much character and elegance (although it can run up a budget too)!

Very stylish, I love the pictures. Might have to try the gallery wall in my own bathroom!
I didn’t know you took requests, I have one too. I live in an old English pub (bar?). It has lots of open fires and ‘oldy worldy charm’ but I got fed up with brown and wanted something more modern. I’ve bought two great big comfy bright teal blue sofas, but now I’ve run out of inspiriation. Do you have any pictures with really bright sofas, that still look stylish? There’s a challenge!
ADetailedHouse said:
Oh WOW! That is a design dilemma!! I will look through my archives and put something together for you. It will take me a while as I don’t have things sorted by bright vs. neutral furniture. Can you describe the walls, ceilings and floors?
e1aine said:
I’ll post a picture. Try not to be horrified – I’ve definitely reached a ‘design dilema’. Frankly, I’m not very good at this stuff!
ADetailedHouse said:
I will NOT be horrified!! I have a brother who is color blind that I visited many times in college when each roommate contributed a different piece of furniture! Enough said? No? I’ve been in fraternity houses where the floors have a nice patina of beer and not one sofa matched.
If everyone was good at the same things, life would be boring and there would be no need for blogs, books, conversations, etc! So please don’t feel shy!
e1aine said:
Thank you.
ADetailedHouse said:
Hi! So, I looked at the picture and had a few questions: are the sofas the same size? This long skinny room (that was 2 rooms) what do you use it for?
On first glance, I would rotate the mirror to give the room some height, plus it would fit the mantle space a little better I think.
How do you feel about adding a rug? If so, what are you more drawn towards: a creamy solid color or patterned?
e1aine said:
Hi there. Thanks for looking at this.
The sofas are the same size, but different designs (same range). The end of the room I’ve pictured is just used for watching tv, reading and lazing. The other end is not used apart from a computer and a seat. It’s not comfortable!.
The suggestion regarding the mirror is a very good one. In fact I don’t like the mirror, it was supposed to be temporary (12 years ago) so I think I will replace that with a taller thinner one.
I’d like a rug. A solid colour I think. Someone suggested lemon or grey – there is grey in the cushion pattern, though it is hard to see in the picture. I like creamy colours too.
A coffee table might help? Do you think it looks a bit ‘bare’?
Thanks again.
ADetailedHouse said:
Hi, so I just posted living rooms in blue, which is to give you some ideas for color schemes. I would definitely not do a grey rug…it can give the appearance of looking dirty! I would suggest cream or buttery yellow but if it’s a high traffic area then one with a pattern. I would swap out the ceiling fan for a chandelier, either paint the fireplace or stain it a darker (mahogany) color, definitely get a coffee table, move one sofa so that they are facing each other BUT I can’t tell if there’s a door on the other side of the room…
Look at the drapes in the pictures (don’t worry, I know some cost effective options!) and read the comments on the pictures about addressing the sides of fireplaces. I would add some architectural elements, like crown molding. If you are REALLY adventurous and in this house for the long haul, I would address the floors so that they arent mismatched. I’d have them sanded and stained. What is the thing on the ceiling on the left side?
Whew! Look at the pictures and then we’ll talk more…
andreamayhg said:
What a fantastic post! I love the simplicity of a black and white bathroom and I’m always very much in favor of classic white marble. I just took Maria Killam’s amazing True Colour Expert workshop this week, so I wanted to point out that the undertones of paint colors should be established by looking at the undertones of your fixed finishes, such as tile and stone. Carrara, for example, has a blue undertone.

The picture of your house on the home page looks like a castle! Where is it? Without being too specific,of course. Do you live in the U.S.?

healingmagichands said:
These are all lovely bathrooms, but the wall paper choice in the one with the hammered pewter sink (lovely, by the way) makes me think “acid flashback”.
My other reaction to these is that they really are not practical in terms of family living. Sorry, but I wonder how one would feel about all the artwork the first time your teenager comes home from a big party and has a projectile vomiting episode (this actually happened to me and there was pizza involved — you really don’t want to know), or when your kids all have the flu (Think the “Divine Secrets of the YaYa sisterhood”).
But of course, these are all for Master Bedrooms, right? No kids being sick, no teenagers… Anyway, my reaction to quite a few of these is “Yes, it’s very beautiful, but who is going to clean this bathroom and do all the dusting required???” Hmmm?
ADetailedHouse said:
Yes, that’s why I posted the warning about practicality, however, that being said, I grew up with antiques, cream silk sofas and NO room off limits to us (even when we were toddlers). We were taught to treat things well and not mess them up…and we never did, even as teenagers when my parents went away.
My daughter, when she was 4, once told a guest to coaster their drink, as it wasn’t in a wine glass and was on a wood table. Both my children have antiques in their room and we talk about the family history of them and the importance of treating them well. They both also have cream color sofas in their sitting rooms!!
As far as who’s going to clean the bathrooms, a different finish may show more dirt, but those surfaces should be cleaned and dusted *anyway*. If it’s the size of the space, I would assume most would have help. That does not make them any less beautiful, nor change my admiration for their beauty.

I too am a fan of detail… i’d love to see a bathroom that is not fully scripted in tiles or marble.

Beautiful ideas here – we also love the tile work which extends up the wall. Also love the tile “carpet” – reminds us of the tile floors in old Australian/New Zealand homes, although the tiles tend to be coloured. Black and white is so tailored, clean and crisp, isn’t it?!

working with the existing black & white tiles in both the kitchen and main floor bath of our 1920’s english tudor home, i went totally black & white with these rooms. best thing i ever did. while in time i want to change over other rooms, these two rooms are enduring! the kitchen cabinets are painted white, appliances are stainless, and a black & while toile patterned wallpaper covers the walls. food and people are the focus and color in the kitchen. vintage black & white tiles again in the bath, and my vision for this room was a wonderful old hotel bath. porcelain fixtures, crisp white towels, a black & white pinstripe (like a man’s shirt) ralph lauren wallpaper, and nothing but framed black & white etchings and lithographs on the wall. what can i say but sometimes restraint works!
ADetailedHouse said:
That sounds absolutely AMAZING!!! “Old hotel bath”, porcelain, etc will never go out of style. And I’m *completely* jealous of you for having a 1920’s Tudor home!

I was so excited about painting a wall black in a spare bedroom – doing the whole room in black and white with splash of yellow. The photos here and in the black and white bedroom post are so beautiful and obviously done by pros. Now I’m not so sure if I can pull it off. IS there some secret to painting a wall black? I have read true black should be avoided, but to use a mixture of colors to create a deep, dark color that looks black. any thoughts?
ADetailedHouse said:
Huh. I have never heard about using a mixture of colors to create a deep, dark black. The only secret (which isn’t a secret) is using a tinted primer first so you do to have to do so many coats! I would just go with black if you want black or if you are a little nervous, then a dark midnight blue, which would look nice with yellow and white. The midnight blue would read black in certain lights, but in a sunny room, it will have a blue hue… I’d also talk to the most senior person where you buy paint. They are so knowledgeable.

It’s so funny – I was just thinking about black and white as a wedding theme. If I could wear the bridal equivalent of that polka dot room, I would! I would just need to avoid admitting that my inspiration came from a bathroom…

I love so many of these bathrooms! Some of them are so austere and yet still inviting, somehow. I agree that the silver frames are a nice touch.
I think my favourite touches are tied at the ebony wardrobe and the wrought iron detailing on the tile. LOVE that bit. I’ve never seen anything like it.
“Love the use of drapery as it fits in with treating the bathroom like you would any other room. But I would lose the lamp on the counter.”
Sure, lose the lamp… and the tea…
ADetailedHouse said:
Yes, I do not know why they would have FOUR light fixtures within 4 feet of each other!!! And there is another chandelier in there too! To me, that is bad design (and I wouldn’t put a lamp on the edge of a sink where you wash your face)!
I love the wardrobe too!! What a great alternative to a linen closet – and MUCH prettier!!
catherinebowman said:
Perhaps they like the bathroom bright. Which is fine for some things. But a bathroom like that… I would hope that the level of light is adjustable. It’s so luxurious and sexy otherwise I’d want to be able to light it that way for a long soak in the tub. 😀

Black and white bathrooms are just fab, but I think they need to be of a scale that allows you to really appreciate their impact – too small and they can fail to deliver that ‘something’ that b&w is all about. I’ve stayed in three hotels with fabulous b&w bathrooms in London, in New York and in Vienna. The one in Vienna had an original bath that was so long and deep that I could float, just heavenly.
Your choices are excellent, I’m jut not sure I’d have the courage to go that bold!
Keep the ideas coming!

Excellent examples of different approaches to using black and white.
I just love b&w bathrooms, but they need to be of a scale to really appreciate the impact that b&w gives to a room. I’ve stayed in three hotels with b&w bathrooms in London, New York and Vienna. They were all very striking, New York had a beautiful anteroom also in b&w, but the one in Vienna was probaby the most impactful – an original bath that was so long and so deep that I floated the whole time. Just fabulous.

I totally don’t understand why that one bathroom has a table complete with TEA settings. We can ALL agree that we’ve eaten in our bathroom while applying makeup or doing hair…BUT tea? Ew! Never. Even after having lived abroad, I don’t know of anybody who does this! Other than that everything is just beautiful! We lived in Old Town VA before we moved to Texas and now Colorado. It was a historic building so we chouldn’t change ANYTHING! The tile was retro small black and white tile. Wish I’d had THIS inspiration while living there… I could have done SOMETHING!

We’re going to (eventually) have to rennovate the two bathrooms in the house we are buying and I was thinking about a black/white theme with tiffany blue accents in the half bath. That color scheme is kind of trending right now, so I don’t know if I’ll still feel the same when it comes time to tackle the bathroom, but I just love the look.
