My older brother, the City Mouse, and his wife had a baby two months ago, which they yearned for – they had been trying for many, many years …with many, many bumps along the way 😦 So it was truly glorious that this pregnancy went to term. In addition to some presents, I wanted them to have something from me that wasn’t bought or manufactured, so I set out to make a “baby sleeping” sign for the nursery door knob.
This is the front…
And the back (still very much in progress), which says “I am sleeping” in French, Traditional Chinese, German and Spanish.
(It’s never too early for teaching moments!)
With the children home and glued to my side 24/7, I haven’t been able to finish the door hanger, but once I do, I will post detailed instructions with pictures.
And, now getting it finished and mailed isn’t as big of a rush. Not to be a “Debbie Downer” (although saying it doesn’t really make me less of one does it?), but… my poor brother, unfortunately lives in the Financial District (downtown Manhattan) of New York City and has been without power since Hurricane Sandy hit. UGH! He’s taking it in stride – what else can you do – but I feel just awful!
I’m still cleaning up from the hurricane too, which is a welcome diversion – the downed branches and trees that are on the outside, but worse, the devastation that our little ones caused inside from being home from school for so many days … those Tasmanian devils really did a number in the basement! But we were the lucky ones
Your poor brother and his family – hope they get power soon as I’m sure it’s not easy coping with such small baby without it 😦 Love the hanging.
I love it! Can’t wait to see the tutorial. Hope your brother and his family are still doing okay.
Love the sign. Hoping also that they get power back soon. Glad that you were ok after Sandy since there was so much devastation!
Sending thoughts your way for you family during the recovery process – be safe! Great sign – love it – oh so creative!
You are so kind (as always)!!!! Thank you!!!!
Love the sign (please don’t make one of those ‘baby on board’ signs for their car through – I’m never quite sure what the parents expect me to do when they stick those on their back windows & it reminds me of a George Carlin line that I won’t put out there).
Can’t imagine having a baby & being without power, yikes!
I think I’ve finally put away all of the flashlights, candles, bottled water, etc. but I still need to get the pile of muddy dog towels in the washer
You ALWAYS make me laugh!! I’ve seen George Carlin’s bit on TV about the baby signs (plus my brother doesn’t own a car) so no worries there!! Oh and that sweet Lola – she is really something else! That picture you posted of her in the snow is so adorable!! It would be impossible to ever be mad at her! I get giddy when you bring her up – the egg sandwich story, the drooling 95 pound dog in a panic, etc!
The last “baby on board” sign that I was behind had a woman juggling her cell phone & a cup of coffee. When she got to a yard sale she slammed on her brakes & just about took the turn on 2 wheels…so much for me worrying about her kids in the back.
As for Lola, she’s 7 yrs old which is getting up there in Berner years but still acts like a puppy. Of all my Berners she is the most shall we say “willful” & food is just not safe around her. But she’s my constant companion & I have to admit to being a little bit peeved at her when she broke my ankle…I did get over that but she loves sticks – every stick is her stick- so getting around on crutches was a real challenge with the big girl around.
I’m thinking of making one for my own door so the girls upstairs will remember the old girl below when they come home at all hours.
I have a friend in New Jersey who still has no power, although she has hot water and can cook. I feel bad for all of them.
My sister needs one.
Hope everything gets better as soon as possible.
I need this! We have a “Please don’t ring the doorbell” sign but wouldn’t you know people still do.
Yes, you do!!! How irritating!!! My husband works from home and Fedex does it every time they drop off a package – not for signing, just when they put it on our door step – which sets off our 3 German Shepherds!! Grrrrrr!!!!! And you poor thing, I remember those brutal, sleep-deprived days! At least you can unplug a phone!
I can’t believe the day I responded to your post the UPS guy rang our doorbell and woke the baby. We also have dogs that hate doorbells so he rang, they barked, baby cried and the sleep deprived mommy actually went out and yelled at the UPS guy. So, today I am making a temporary sign for the door until I can make something a little prettier.
Great sign! I hope they have power by now!
Thank you! And they do! I’m glad you didn’t lose power and you are right what you said in your blog and I said it too in another comment – it shows the goodness in people!! A picture made the rounds on Facebook of powercords coming out of a townhouse in NYC that said, “We have power, please feel free to charge your phones!” My children’s school is collecting donations, their swim team, our local fire dept, local companies here have donated trucks and drivers to go to NJ – it really is touching!
I am glad Sandy the fury didn’t hurt you and your family.
Thank you so much 🙂
Sorry to hear about your brother and his family. I am a New Yorker so it hits home for me as well.
The sign is adorable. Leave it you to take it up a notch and write it in other languages on the back side! Must be a wahoo thing 🙂
Vanessa
My fellow wahoo!! It must be!! It must have hurt to be here and see the pictures. New York has faced so many adversities, but it has also shown the innate goodness in so many people too. The cream always rises to the top 🙂
I am so glad to hear that you and your family are well. Sometimes the indoor tornadoes are worse than the outside huricanes.
Thank you! I don’t think I am ever going to get a handle on the mess they’ve made! I had books sorted by topic and they took cases upon cases of books down…why? To play store!! AGH!!! I did that before kids when I had a job – and leisure time. With kids – no way! I hope you’re doing well 🙂
Big congratulations on the new addition 🙂
Fantastic sign. The “tutorials” on the flip side are a great idea for even visitors to the nursery! Hope I don’t miss the tutorial. Will be a great share entry. Thanks for sharing.
