I’ve seen some pretty unique things, but when I stumbled upon this, I did a double take. I think I’ve made it well known that I love all things old and historic ….but sometimes they do need a facelift and this was pretty ingenious:

So if you have an old tub lying around and would like to do something with it, this may be the idea you’ve been waiting for.
To achieve this look:
- Sand the glaze of the outside of the tub
- Wipe of dust
- Glue on tiles to the rough surface
- Grout the tiles
- Lightly wipe with a damp sponge to remove grout from the surface of the tile
I would love to do a tub with a white iridescent glass tile for a more subtle appearance:
Also, to make it easier, use sheets of tiles, which can come in many different shapes as well:
I prefer non-sanded grout whenever possible and this is a scenario where it is possible. Non-sanded grout means smaller seams between the tiles and just looks better in my opinion. I don’t want to look at grout; I want to look at the tile – and the possibilities with the tile are endless.
In this picture it is obvious they replaced the legs with completely brand new ones, which can be bought for a pretty penny (approximately $1,000 for chrome, $2,000 for gold) But I wouldn’t be a good friend if I didn’t give you some other options, now would I? 😉 So, I will do a post soon exploring the different ways to emulate this and other finishes.
I hope you liked the post and found the tub as interesting as I did! Have a great day!
I like that idea. looks fantastic.
Now that is a bathtub!!!
BTW, I’ll get them photos to you once my daughter has tidied her bedroom
Lovely looking tub! If you don’t like grout it’s worth taking a look at the tile range at Porcelanosa (which would include mosaics) as some ranges are designed to be totally grout free. It’s the special way they are made and cut and they look amazing.See this link to their site for examples http://www.porcelanosa.com/uk/wall_tiles/ceramic_tiles.php
Wow, this looks pretty fabulous. I wonder if we will find them there but its brilliant.
This is a great idea!
This is beautiful. I wonder i we ill start seeing them out in the marketplace.

Many, many years ago, I worked in an antique shop that refinished furniture before they sold it. I remember turning an old copper bathtub into a coffee table, so this wonderful renovation takes me back to those days, long ago. This tub is beautiful the way the new owners fixed it up, no doubt. The tub I renovated had a clear glass top added so that displays could be inserted below it to lay against the copper background. I wished I had taken photos, because that tub turned out rather interesting as well. It’s amazing how a little imagination can transform old and drab into refreshing and unique.
Wow! What a great idea! I’m storing this one away.. some day I’d love to have a tub like that!
Stunning! I love it!
hhhhhmmmmm….verrrry interesting…
Whoa!! LOVE THAT! Pinning to my DIY board…not that I’d be able to execute that myself, but just gorgeous! Nice post.
I remember having lovely baths in my grandparents’ claw foot tub. It was very deep and I loved it, but I suspect I would have a hard time climbing out of a tub like that now. They are pretty and I do like the idea of the iridescent tiles covering the outside.
love clawfoot tubs! wish I had one myself! *daydreams*
If I had the patience I would try to recreate that look with paint. It is beautiful! No, stunning!!!
Recreating it with paint is a great idea!!
That is a brilliant idea! I love the glass tile, I did my kitchen backsplash with glass tile and it’s so elegant looking!
I love getting emails with your posts…..I don’t always comment, but I always read and appreciate your efforts!
Debi (I’ve about blogged all I can at this point…lol )
A kitchen backsplash in glass tile is breathtaking!!! I’m so glad you like getting my emails – I have such a HUGE soft spot for you as you have been following me from the beginning when I first started blogging and I am SO appreciative of that!! Thank you SO much!! xoxo – Kearney
Really? I thought you had been at this for years! All of your posts are so well put together and informative……When I started my blog, I was so sure I had a lot to say about my past years in the music business, but then I decided some things were better off not being shared (while my parents are still living anyway!) So now it’s just a hodge podge of stuff….lol
stunning
Very neat idea!
Great idea. I’ve seen these painted but never tiled before – it is very effective.
PS: Tried to subscribe to your blog but it won’t recognise my e-mail 😦
So I call in instead.
Oh – may have cracked it by using my facebook account rather than the wordpress account (alter ego: Zactheallblack). You don’t need to post this comment!
Something like this would look so good in my 18th century Provence house 🙂

gorgeous! absolutely love it — makes the clawfoot tub go modern.
Lovely idea and wish I had a claw bathtub just lying around…:)
I love claw foot tubs. This looks like it’s made for royalty. And glass tile — love it. I do have a bit in my kitchen.
That is absolutely beautiful! Wow
I love this tub. Wonder what else you could do that on.
You always have great ideas 🙂
Love the tub. Just got offered a clawfoot tub for free, but it will not fit in my bathroom with out major renovation. This of course stinks because I would love to have a tub that looks like the one you’ve posted.
Oooohhhhh – I would still take the tub! If you have storage (an attic/basement) you never know if you can use it in the future and, if not, at the low end, they are worth $500 🙂
What a great idea! Keep up the good work. x
Very cool idea! I have an old clawfoot tub sitting around. Maybe when I finish my vintage trailer project I should try giving this a whirl 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
I had to save that in my pinterest

This is awesome! I love our claw foot tub in its current state, but if I ever need a change, this is definitely at the top of my idea file. . .I’ve see folks gold or silver leaf them too. The effect is stunning! Thank you for sharing.
Insert scream —->here. I think I just found a facelift for my tiny bathroom. Thank you.
