built in bookcase, chandelier shades, Crown molding, Lighting, Lockheed Martin, make valances, panel molding, pink girls room, valance
There’s only so much time in the day and sometimes things have to take a back seat. Unfortunately, it’s been my blog!
I have been working on Lockheed Martin’s Cyber Security Initiative into the corporate sector due to the unprecedented number of cyber security attacks, which has been very time consuming since it is a new venture, but interesting, and completely unrelated to aesthetics.
Spending so much time on the technical, I’m so happy to spend some time on creative matters! So, on to my post…
When I was expecting my 2nd child, I knew there was a long road ahead in terms of fixing up her room. I started when I was first expecting and was still at it when I was 8 1/2 months. If only I had taken a before picture!
It was a major overhaul. We added crown molding, panel molding, door surrounds, two built in bookcases and ceiling medallions, I painted chandeliers and made and trimmed chandelier shades, I designed and made a rug, a play table, and (my favorite) three window valances WHEW!!!!
Even though this is a little girl’s room, all the projects I did can be done in other rooms.
I sketched out the design on plywood and made these fabric-covered valances for all the windows. This treatment can be used in any room and with any shape you want.
I added trim to further accentuate the outline of the valances.
We added both bookcases shown above, which also looks nice on either side of a fireplace.
Every time I go to take pictures of this room, I’ve missed the best lighting. I’m not a great photographer as it is and my pictures are always my weak point, so it takes me a while to get ones I think are even close to being good enough to post. I hope to show more soon and then talk about how we did these projects…
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the sneak peek!
~~~
P.S. Since these are my personal pictures, please ask first for permission if you would like to use them. Thank you!
What a beautiful room! (So is your little girl 😀 ) I love the valances. And bookcases are always a weak point for me. I love them. Shelves are great. I’m a hoarder of books and other (select) dust collectors and I love love love shelves!
Wonderful job!
ADetailedHouse said:
Thank you so much!! Haha on ‘other dust collectors!! I hoard books too!! I’ve never bought an ‘ebook’ because I want the book itself and I just adore children’s books. No matter how many bookcases, they always get filled up…not always with books though!
catherinebowman said:
You’re very welcome. I lost a massive portion of my collection (books) in my last two moves. One of my boxes got destroy by water and I had to give away other books. I have a mammoth collection of ebooks too though, some of them repeats. Not entirely sure why.
ADetailedHouse said:
Ugh – so sorry about the water damage! And that must have been so hard to give away some of the books, although I have a bunch of paperbacks I could easily give away! That’s so funny about the repeats – maybe you had bought them, but forgot, then read a review and bought them again?
Adorable! We need a detailed blog-post on exactly how you made the valences so that we can copy your creativity four our own little princesses rooms 🙂
Thank you! I can definitely do a post with the specifics and show how to make them. They are actually really easy and trust me, I’m no Bob Villa 🙂
Gorgeous and I love the colors you chose. I really love the detail of the valances & of course the crown molding just makes everything look so elegant. Ummm, is the dog supposed to be on the bed?
On another note I know you’ve received many well deserved awards, but have forwarded on yet another to you for you terrific site, the Kreative Blogger award is yours. No pressure but we got to keep you in awards so you’ll keep on writing.
Thank you SO much!! That DOES keep me inspired, because honestly, there have been a couple of times that I’ve thought twice about blogging because I’m so scared of making mistakes or putting something out there that isn’t good enough! Your comment makes those fears melt away! So I am deeply appreciative of your words! You really came in at a time when I needed a boost!!
And yes, the dogs are always allowed on the beds 🙂
Beautiful! What a lucky little girl. I am a book hoarder also but with not nearly enough shelfs so my bedroom is starting too look like a hoarder’s room.
Pink and green make such a lovely fresh colour scheme for a girl’s room. I could use book cases on either side of our bed. It seems we never have enough bookcases. My husband and I are pastors and books are a real passion with us. I love the different bindings too. It makes such a colourful addition to a room. Now, we just have to read them all…another thing entirely.
Ha! Just wish there was more time in the day…I’ve written the post for the valances, but I’ve taken some and they are awful! I’m *terrible* at taking pictures, but I don’t like doing posts without them. I know you’ve commented several times about wanting to know how to do them and that you frequently reblog my posts, but I’m in a quandary because of the pics…sigh…
