My mother used to say, “Everything has a home and a place.” This is a great philosophy in theory. She, however, did not have my two little ones going behind her taking everything out! My point is, storage solutions need to be easy in order to be ongoing. Otherwise, it was a nice idea that lasted a month or so.
Adding bottom cabinets to your pantry is a nice idea and I believe in making every space attractive. However, I would probably go to Home Depot and get stock cabinets, instead of incurring the cost of the higher quality kitchen cabinets for a pantry. OR there are building “left-over” stores and nonprofits, like Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore that run building supply depots.
I also have to comment on the curved cabinet of the kitchen island! I have never seen a cabinet that has a bow before! Gorgeous!! Via AtticMag
In between cabinets, there are frequently gaps between cabinets, which are disguised by “fillers”, flat pieces of wood, or something more ornate like a pilaster. These gaps are open spaces that can be used for pullout shelving or racks.
If you saw my post on how to make a pullout spice cabinet, the pullout above is made the same way except the rails are put on the bottom and top instead of the side. Adding a front molding, like the pilaster here, further dresses it up and gives your kitchen a custom look. Via Wood-Mode

Better Homes and Garden recently gave some ideas for keeping the clutter at bay with smart storage and organization ideas for the kitchen.
Hideaway bins via Bilotta
Instead of stacking plates up above, Bilotta has a pegboard drawer that allows you to change the pegs to suit your needs. This would be an easy project to put into existing cabinets.

Looking for more solutions, I visited the Container Store and chose these to show as they were very functional and all very reasonably priced – a large majority under $10 and no item above $20 when I looked, however 2 were on sale.

Country Living showed this kitchen storage option – but imagine this in a different color. The “gingerbread trim” is an interesting element and very easily added. Same goes for the crown and baseboard molding they added to the shelving unit. This could be created from any old book shelf, even a Craigslist find. The large storage jars are perfect for keeping flour, sugar, rice, etc. and while it looks very pretty to have everything in glass jars, it’s just not practical.

Lastly, but most importantly, I REALLY want to thank everyone for all the kind comments on my last post. Honestly, I was a little reticent to post about Scraggly the Fox, because much to my dismay and confusion, the story has been met with mixed reactions.
Your comments just show that there are incredible people with compassion and kindness! It did cross my mind that those who recoiled from the story just didn’t comment, but I quickly dismissed that idea 😉
I hope you liked this post and to see you for the next one!

I love these storage ideas. The only bad thing about seeing some of these things is I think, are people’s homes really like this?? I mean, mine is not a pig sty but I just can’t keep my pantry “organized” like that. Sometimes I think watching HGTV makes my expectations of what my house should look like… be unrealistic. I recognize that most of America is not living with Candice Olson’s designs. LOL
ADetailedHouse said:
Oh, no! My house sure isn’t!! Those people on HGTV probably had a cleaning crew come in before the camera crew 😉 I *try* to keep my pantry organized, but it slides over time…

I store most of my dry goods, and some wet goods in the fridge in glass jars. I love to repurpose used jars and bottles. It works well for me since I get a lot of stuff at the bulk section of my grocery store. I write on the jar with a sharpie, and when I need to change its use, that washes right off.
I love organizational pictures! Thanks for sharing.

That is such a great idea keeping it in the fridge! No little critters ever! Our grocery store doesn’t have bulk 😦 Glass containers are SO much prettier!

I love the green and white/glass pantry!! If only we could only fit it into our house. I dream about starting from scratch and designing our own kitchen and pantry. Heck, while I’m at it, the whole house!! After all dreams are free and size is of no consequence. Hahaha. 😀

An idea I saw one time about making space where there wasn’t one really impressed me. The person has sawed into his or her kitchen walls and made shelves in the few inches between one room and the next (the width of the studs), and then put a nice door to finish it off. Would be great for spices or other small jars or cans!
ADetailedHouse said:
That is such a great idea! Good for small bathrooms too!!

Unfortunately, all of my efforts to keep our house clean and organized amount to nothing if housemates are not aware and helpful to the methods. Any tips on getting others to follow a plan, regardless of how easy it is? (I have a hard enough time getting them to put dishes away anywhere, let alone in a cupboard)

Inspiring storage ideas. I like the idea of using the insides of cabinet doors. I have given up on having a unique place for every item, too. My best recommendation is having some places where you allow for clutter. To keep it tidy, some boxes , folders and drawers have to be the place for everything. Keep on posting good ideas and inspiration:)

I love your blog! When we’re ready to buy a house, I would probably base it on ONE thing too…perhaps the laundry room and how I can make it pretty. I totally have kitchen OCD! I’ve had to restrain myself (we are currently and temporarily living with my parents)…but OMG once we get there (buying our own place), I can guarantee you it will be storage and organizing solutions to the max! Thanks for this post!

Regarding Scraggly the fox, normally they don’t want anything to do with humans, so I was surprised that whole scheme worked. But you shouldn’t be surprised by the response because animal stories are always winners, no matter what format.
ADetailedHouse said:
It did take a LONG time before he would let me get close to him…he just saw me as a meal ticket!
Some people honestly have not responded well to the story – like acted disgusted or thought I should have let nature take its course 😦

Some very cool ideas! Thanks! I remember seeing an episode of This Old House where there were no cabinets on the bottom. Only drawers. A interesting idea considering that most cabinets today have 1 or two shelves that slide out.

Nice ideas for the kitchen! Do you have any storage ideas for homeschool moms with LOTS of curriculum books? I’m using an old antique wardrobe and I’m hoping my husband will one day add a few shelves to the right side. I love it! Thanks for stopping by my site. I’m honored!! Many blessings to you!
ADetailedHouse said:
Thank you very much! I love using wardrobes for storage – I even have one in our kitchen!
On to your question: Is there room to do narrow, but tall matching bookshelves on either side of the wardrobe? I like tend to prefer symmetry, which is why I bring up one on either side and narrow if the space is tight. Is there any way you could post some pictures of the room?
If your husband is handy enough to add bookshelves, I would probably scout out Craigslist for office furniture bookshelves – weird I know, but you can get Tall, matching, solid wood ones – and he can add crown and base molding to them. This would be a good option if you wanted painted ones.
You can also do bookshelves about one foot down from the ceiling around the entire perimeter of the room with pretty brackets depending on the style of your room/house.
Please let me know what you think…this is just off the top of my head and it would be easier if I saw a few pictures of the room 🙂
